„Ich bin eine Informationen sammelnde Spionin”, scherzte ich üblicherweise, als mich die Leute fragten, was ich denn eigentlich mache, „manchmal für die Institutionen, manchmal für meine Kolleg_innen”. Als Künstlerin/Wisenschaftlerin habe ich meine Doktorarbeit über die performativen Praktiken in Kunst und Aktivismus im Post-Handover Hongkong durchgeführt. Dieser Witz rettet mich jedoch nicht aus der Verworrenheit, da die Kolleg_innen, mit denen ich arbeitete, in ihren performativen und aktivistischen Arbeitsweisen ebenso „widerspenstig” wie ich waren. Die Erforschung ephemerer und prekärer Praktiken erfordert einerseits besondere Sorgfalt und spezifische Methoden, insbesondere im institutionellen Umfeld. Andererseits erwies sich die pro-demokratische Occupy- oder Umbrella-Bewegung im Jahre 2014, die einst von der Hoffnung der Menschen auf Veränderung gnährt war, als ein Trauma des Scheiterns, der sukzessiven Verfolgung und weiterer Unterdrückung. Wenn ein_e Künstler_in ein_e Gelehrte_r wird; wenn Performance zur verkörperten Forschung wird; wenn Forschung Aktivismus ist: da gelüstet es mich von Zeit zu Zeit zu einer Gratwanderung. Wie kann eine „performative Autoethnographie” entwickelt und eingesetzt werden, um die Konstruktion und Konstruiertheit unserer Erinnerungen, Erfahrungen und unseres Wissens als ein dialogisches, gemeinsames und kritisches Projekt neu zu durchdenken und re-imaginieren, welches den Status quo herausfordert, destabilisiert oder sogar verändert? Was, wenn dies letztlich weder eine Performance noch eine Ethnographie wäre?

“I am a spy who collects information,” I usually made this joke when people queried what I was actually doing, “sometimes for the institutions, sometimes for my fellow artists.” As an artist/researcher, I conducted my doctoral research on the performative practices in art and activism in the post-Handover Hong Kong. This joke cannot save me from the mudded water as I worked with my fellow artists who were as “restive” as me in our performative and activist practices. Researching practices which are ephemeral and precarious, on the one hand, demands special care and specific methodology, especially within an institutional setting. On the other hand, the pro-democracy Occupy or Umbrella Movement in 2014 which was once endowed with people’s hope for change turned out to be a trauma of failure, successive prosecution and further oppression. When an artist becomes a scholar; when performance is an embodied research; when research is activism: I feel like walking a tightrope from time to time.  How can a “performative autoethnography” be developed and used to review and re-imagine the construction and constructedness of our memories, experiences and knowledge as a dialogic, mutual and critical project that challenges, destablises and even makes a change in status quo and power relations? What if, this is not a performance and not an ethnography after all?

(de) Als medienübergreifende Künstlerin, Wissenschfatlerin, Kuratorin und Autorin konzentriert sich Wen Yau in den letzten Jahren auf Performance/Live Art und soziale Praktiken. Ihre Arbeiten setzen sich oft mit kultureller Differenz und Intimität im öffentlichen Raum auseinander und wurden international gezeigt. Sie arbeitete als Wissenschaftlerin am Asia Art Archive (2005-2012) und leitete mehrere Forschungsprojekte, darunter die erste Hong Kong Performance Art Research (2005-06), A Glimpse into Performance Art in Indonesia (2010), etc. und organisierte Action Script: Symposium on Performance Art Practice and Documentation in Asia (2010). Sie hat kürzlich ihre Doktorarbeit Performing Identities: Performative Practices in post-Handover Hong Kong Art and Activism an der Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University abgeschlossen. (eng) As a cross-media artist, researcher, curator and writer, Wen Yau has focused on performance/live art and social practices in the last few years. Her works often grapple with cultural difference and intimacy in public space and have been presented internationally. She worked as researcher at Asia Art Archive (2005-2012) and conducted several research projects including the first-ever Hong Kong Performance Art Research (2005-06), A Glimpse into Performance Art in Indonesia (2010), etc. and organized the Action Script: Symposium on Performance Art Practice and Documentation in Asia (2010). She has just completed her PhD thesis Performing Identities: Performative Practices in post-Handover Hong Kong Art and Activism at the Academy of Visual Arts, Hong Kong Baptist University. In 2015-2016, she served as Fulbright Visiting Scholar at the Performance Studies Department at the Northwestern University, USA. She also contributes frequently to various periodicals in Hong Kong and Asia. https://www.wenyau.net; https://www.aicahk.org/eng/author.asp?name=wenyau; https://medium.com/@wenyau/
