Abstract

(de) Martha Wilson ist eine feministische Künstlerin und Galeriedirektorin aus den USA. Sie begann ihre Karriere in den frühen 1970er Jahren in Halifax, während sie Englisch an der Dalhousie University studierte und am Nova Scotia College of Art and Design Englisch unterrichtete. Martha Wilson arbeitete in einem damals männlich dominierten, konzeptualistischen Milieu und schuf bahnbrechende Foto- und Videoarbeiten, die ihre weibliche Subjektivität durch Rollenspiele, Kostümtransformationen und Eingriffe in männlichen und anderen weiblichen Personas untersuchten. Sie entwickelte ihre performative Arbeitsweise weiter, nachdem sie 1974 nach New York City gezogen war, wo sie auch das Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc. gründete und bis heute leitet: ein von Künstler_innen geführtes Zentrum in der Innenstadt, das sich der Erforschung und Förderung innovativer Installations-, Performance- und zeitbasierter Kunstpraktiken widmet.

(eng) Martha Wilson is an American feminist artist and gallery director who began her career in the early 1970s in Halifax while studying English Literature at Dalhousie University and teaching English at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Working in a male-dominated conceptualist milieu at that time, Martha Wilson generated pioneering photographic and video work that explored her female subjectivity through role-playing, costume transformations and invasions of male and other female personas. She further developed her performative practice after moving to New York City in 1974 where she also founded and continues to direct Franklin Furnace Archive, Inc., a downtown artist-run center dedicated to the exploration and promotion of innovative installation, performance and time-based art practices.
This lecture chronicles the interwoven stages of Martha Wilson’s creative contributions within the context of early feminist and socially engaged studio practice as well as her dissemination of the work of like-minded individuals through the auspices of Franklin Furnace. Central to the discussion is Martha Wilson’s presence as an agent of transformative change, initially in her artwork and then her facilitation of cultural change through her leadership of Franklin Furnace. Martha Wilson’s selection of 40 projects from 40 years of programming at the archive also becomes a self-portrait of sorts as she highlights works that are historically significant for pushing boundaries within exhibition and display culture as well as society at large.

(de) Martha Wilson ist eine wegweisende feministische Künstlerin und Kunstraumdirektorin. Sie kreierte in den letzten vier Jahrzehnten innovative Foto- und Videoarbeiten, die ihre weibliche Subjektivität untersuchen. Sie wurde vom New York Times Kritiker, Holland Cotter, als eine der „wichtigsten halbdutzend Personen” für Kunst im downtown Manhattan der 1970er Jahre bezeichnet. 1976 gründete sie Franklin Furnace, einen von Künstler_innen geführten Raum, der sich für die Erforschung, Förderung und Erhaltung von Künstler_innenbüchern, temporären Installationen, Performancekunst und Online-Werken einsetzt.

(eng) Martha Wilson is a pioneering feminist artist and art space director, who over the past four decades has created innovative photographic and video works that explore her female subjectivity. She has been described by New York Times critic Holland Cotter as one of “the half-dozen most important people for art in downtown Manhattan in the 1970s.” In 1976 she founded Franklin Furnace, an artist-run space that champions the exploration, promotion and preservation of artist books, temporary installation, performance art, as well as online works.
Martha Wilson is represented by P.P.O.W Gallery in New York. She received an Honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University in 2013. She has received fellowships for performance art from the National Endowment for the Arts and the New York Foundation for the Arts; Bessie and Obie awards for commitment to artists’ freedom of expression; a Yoko Ono Lennon Courage Award for the Arts; a Richard Massey Foundation-White Box Arts and Humanities Award; a Lifetime Achievement Award from Women’s Caucus for Art; and the Audrey Irmas Award for Curatorial Excellence from the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College.
